Sobell-Style Mandolin (Sold)

Top: European Spruce, Back & Sides: Birdseye Maple, Neck: Mahogany, Fingerboard, Bridge and Head veneer: Ebony.
Hardware: Gotoh individual machine heads Bone nut and saddle

This was a custom order. As Stefan Sobell is no longer making mandolins the client arranged with Stefan to buy the wood and custom tailpiece for me to make a Sobell 'large style' mandolin. Stefan also kindly shared details of his construction method and provided support during the build. (Stefan was aware of me as I had previously renovated the Cittern he made for Andy Irvine in the '70s)
It turned out very well - I was pretty nervous showing it to Stefan but he was very generous, said that although there were small details that would show that it wasn't an original Sobell, sound wise it wasn't possible to tell them apart.
(Note - if you have a requirement for a Sobell instrument please go directly to Stefan at http://www.sobellguitars.com/ in the first instance).
